The felt hat is often associated with the moonshiner and for good reason. The shine was filtered through the felt hat to remove any particles. Norwood told me they would buy a new wool felt hat, tear out the lining and cut a slit in either side to run a stick through to support the hat as a strainer over the barrel. Pouring the liquor in the hat resulted in clarity that was crystal like.
We don’t use felt hats to filter our spirits, but we do have the moonshiner hats at the Distillery. You are welcome to try one on and purchase one to wear if you like. I wouldn’t recommend using our hats to strain alcohol as they are not the traditional wool felt.
